چکیده

The bacterial flora of blue crabs (Callinectes sapid us) from Chesapeake Bay was examined. Hemolymph of normal, healthy blue crabs was found non-sterile, with total bacterial counts ranging from <100 to >3.0 x 10 5 on a seawater-based medium and 0 to >10 5 on Standard Methods Agar. Counts of 0-10 3 were observed on TCBS agar. Vibrio spp., including Vibrio parahaemolyticus, were the major taxonomic groups found in the crab hemolymph. A comparison of crab data with that of Chesapeake Bay oysters revealed a qualitative difference in that the crab hemolymph flora was almost entirely Vibrio spp., whereas the oyster flora included species of a variety of

Incidence of Vibrio species associated with blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) collected from Galveston Bay, Texas.

Bacteria were readily isolated from the hemolymph of a majority (88%) of the blue crabs collected from Galveston Bay, Texas. The hemolymph of most crabs contained moderate (greater than 10(3) bacteria/ml) to heavy (greater than (10(5) bacteria/ml) infections. Large variances were observed in the bacterial number associated with individual crabs, but no significant difference was observed betwee...

A trehalose 6-phosphate synthase gene of the hemocytes of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus: cloning, the expression, its enzyme activity and relationship to hemolymph trehalose levels

Trehalose in ectoderms functions in energy metabolism and protection in extreme environmental conditions. We structurally characterized trehalose 6-phosphate synthase (TPS) from hemocytes of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. C. sapidus Hemo TPS (CasHemoTPS), like insect TPS, encodes both TPS and trehalose phosphate phosphatase domains. Trehalose seems to be a major sugar, as it shows higher l...

The effects of hypoxia and pH on phenoloxidase activity in the Atlantic blue crab, Callinectes sapidus.

In its natural coastal and estuarine environments, the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, often encounters hypoxia, accompanied by hypercapnia (increased CO2) and an associated decrease in water pH. Previous studies have shown that exposure to hypercapnic hypoxia (HH) impairs the crab's ability to remove culturable bacteria from its hemolymph. In the present study we demonstrate that the activity ...

Membrane-associated carbonic anhydrase in gills of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus.

The presence of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) on the basal membrane of the branchial endothelial cells in the blue crab and its physiological significance were studied in vivo using a membrane-impermeant CA inhibitor, quaternary ammonium sulfanilamide (QAS). Injection of QAS into the hemolymph of Callinectes sapidus resulted in the rapid development of a respiratory acidosis; PCO2 rose alm...

Effects of hypercapnic hypoxia on the clearance of Vibrio campbellii in the Atlantic blue crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun.

Callinectes sapidus, the Atlantic blue crab, encounters hypoxia, hypercapnia (elevated CO(2)), and bacterial pathogens in its natural environment. We tested the hypothesis that acute exposure to hypercapnic hypoxia (HH) alters the crab's ability to clear a pathogenic bacterium, Vibrio campbellii 90-69B3, from the hemolymph. Adult male crabs were held in normoxia (well-aerated seawater) or HH (s...
